Sun Chips Compostable Bag

I see a lot of postings about how the Sun Chips compostable bag doesn't actually break down. This is my experience, too. A few months ago I planted a Sun Chips bag in my compost to see if it would disappear.

I had quite forgotten about it when I was rotating out the bottom portion of my compost. Then I came across it.

The Sun Chips bag is as bright and shiny as the day I put it in there. This is in stark contrast to the black compost all around it. My compost is made up of layers of table scraps, grass clippings, and leaves. I admit, I don't take very good care of my compost pile. I water it only occasionally and never turn it. But regardless, it still gives me about 4 batches of good compost per year. This turns out to be more than I need for my small garden.

To give an idea of how all the layers break down, here's the compost pile from top to bottom. Fresh stuff starts on top and then breaks down into the black stuff at the bottom.
